Scary Movies

Just got back from a movie. Raaz. Not bad. I mean watchable. Especially if you pay just 30 bucks for the ticket. While the ending was a bit silly, the build up to it - in true horror movie style - was great. What kind of sadist ghost goes after the (cute) girlfriend of the criminal he really wants to hurt? But then ghosts should be sadists, shouldn't they? He could just gone up to the bad guy, threatened him and got him to disclose the tapes!! But the chick-factor would then go missing. My suggestion: watch it if you want to.

On the way back we (YM, SM, SDG and me) were having a discussion on horror movies, and why really is it so damn difficult to make a good one. The key to this genre is the ending. Anyone can build up the suspense, but it takes a momentary lapse of reason to burst the balloon. Two movies that really come to mind (out of the one's I have seen and leaving out The Exorcist) are The Blair Witch Project and The Shining. They both end well.

You can of course bet that Stanley Kubrick is hardly likely to get anything wrong (apart from the fact that he doesn't have an oscar to show for it). But the Blair Witch ending is the one I like most. I guess, the typical ghost movies miss the plot by trying to 'show' the ghost. Blair Witch does wonderfully well by keeping the end open. The fear comes from the unknown and this is one movie that keeps the unknown unknown. Not many people I have talked to like the movie though. Specifically for this reason, mostly, and for the unorthodox filming style. My suggestion: watch it if you haven't yet.

SDG said that Child's Play was one movie that scared the shit out of him. When he was still in middle school :) I had also watched it around that time. It was scary. But the one thing that really, really scared the shit out of me was an episode of Johnny Soko and his Flying Robot. It had all these zombies and walking dead bodies and ghosts. I remember not having a very good sleep that night. I was in class 3 or 4 at that time. Those zombies didn't really care for the age of a person. They kept coming at me all night. It was scary.
