I had the good fortune of watching "Jimmy" a few days back along with SDG and SH. It was a wonderful late-night entertainment after having a good fill of Hyderabadi biriyani. The movie was, for the lack of a better word, influential. It kept us busy over the next few days at lunch tables and other places. SDG was so taken in by the movie he did some research on the net and came up with this. But that was some time back.
Today we (SDG, SH, SM and me) went to see "Billu - Barber". And that sparked off the thought about what we had witnessed a few days back. Billu is a great barber hairdresser. He goes about his work with passion and honesty. He made the career of Sahir Khan (a cinematic version of Shahrukh Khan). He was the one that gave Sahir his first haircut and the money which Sahir used to travel to Mumbai. Sahir even acknowledged the fact that Billu was the first person to truly realize his (Sahir's) potential. It hardly matters that Sahir, by sheer coincidence, lands up in Billu's village while shooting for a movie inspired by Star Wars!
Billu knows Sahir from his childhood days. And at one point so does his entire village (sounds something like Budbuda). And everyone wants to have him play Midas to get up and close with Sahir. But the honest barber hairdresser tries to thwart all such attempts, but to no avail. But then as most hindi movies go, we end happy with an emotional Sahir spilling the beans at a local school function. Ok, the story is not so great. But you can get a glimpse of the life of a superstar in the movie.
But why am I telling you the story of "Billu - Barber"? After all it is just another movie where Priyadarshan tries hard to replicate the fun of "Hera Pheri" and falls short. Why I am telling you is this - find the village of Budbuda, find Billu get a hair-cut.
Cheers,
Someone who loved "Jimmy"
